Application Process

Everything you need to know about applying to Alto.

The process of applying to an independent school can sometimes be a little overwhelming. The Alto admissions team would like to make it as easy as possible for you. Below you will find a step-by-step explanation of the admissions process for each school section. Just click on the school section you are considering applying for. Preschool Checklist

Follow the steps outlined below to submit an application:

Admissions requirements:

  • Children must be 2 years, 9 months old when entering preschool and should be potty-trained.
  • No prior knowledge of German is required for entering the German immersion preschool at Alto.

Admissions checklist:

  1. Create an online application account or login to your existing account.
  2. Schedule a week day tour or visit us for an open house.
  3. Complete the online application (and pay the non-refundable application fee of $75).
  4. Schedule a play date (optional).
    Visit us with your child and spend a few hours in the classroom while the preschool program is in session. This is not required for admissions but can be helpful when choosing a preschool for your child. Call or email us to reserve a date.
  5. Complete parent questionnaire online.

Elementary School Checklist

Follow the steps outlined below to submit an application:

Admissions requirements:

  • Children must be 5 years old by September 1st when entering the kindergarten.
  • No prior knowledge of German is required for entering the German immersion kindergarten at Alto.
  • Enrollment into 1st grade and higher requires grade-appropriate knowledge of German. Admission decisions are made on a case by case basis.

Admissions checklist:

  1. Create an online application account or login to your existing account.
  2. Schedule a week day tour or visit us for an open house.
  3. Complete the online application (pay the non-refundable application fee of $75).
    We require that you submit the basic application form and the application fee prior to scheduling a shadow day.
  4. Schedule a student visit day (optional)
    Students can spend a day with us at Alto in order to get to know the program and meet students and teachers. This is not required for admissions into elementary school but can be helpful when making a decision about your child’s potential school. Call or email us to reserve a date.
  5. Complete parent questionnaire online.
  6. Submit report cards and teacher recommendations.

Middle School Checklist

Follow the steps outlined below to submit an application:

Admissions checklist:

  1. Create an online application account or login to your existing account.
  2. Schedule a week day tour or visit us for an open house.
  3. Complete the online application (and pay the non-refundable application fee of $75).
    We require that you submit the basic application form and the application fee prior to scheduling a visit day.
  4. Schedule a student visit day.
    Spend a day with us on campus so that you can get to know our program and meet students and teachers. Call or email us to reserve a date.
  5. Interview.
    Student applicants will be interviewed on the day they come for a visit. For students applying from abroad, we will schedule a Skype call. 
  6. Submit ISEE test results. We will also accept the SSAT or the HSPT.
    The Independent School Entrance Examination (ISEE) is the preferred test for students applying to Alto. The test may be taken at any location offered by ISEE. Official test scores must be submitted to Alto directly from the testing agency. Tests must be completed no later than the end of February when applying for the following school year. Students applying from abroad, please contact the admissions office if you have questions regarding these tests.
  7. Complete required forms and submit supplemental documents online.

High School Checklist
